The Thick End - Who we are
We know the thick end, we have lived it and we have seen first hand what is happening in our community and we are compelled to act;
Do more than belong: Participate
Do more than care: Help
Do more than believe: Practice
Do more than be fair: Be kind
-William A. Ward
So where does our name come from and what does our logo symbolise?
Our Name;
The Thick End is an analogy of what mental health is in the community. At the moment the wedge is creating a crack and we are feeling the pain of that but it’s not all too hard to deal with. The problem we see right now is that our health systems have no answer and those who are having very real disruptions to their lives because of mental health are just being told that medication is the answer… this is no bueno! With medications come side effects and side effects lead to more medication to manage. We believe if we as a community, a society and as a global co-operative don’t take strong decisive action now to address this - the thick end is coming.
Our Symbology;
We all face mountains and challenges for some they are part of the road and others they are road blocks. The mountain in our main logo symbolises the challenge and the solution. The solution to hard problems is to do hard things, seek challenges that will build our resilience and create the wear with all to take on the challenges that would ordinarily knock us off our balance.
;
We have also adopted the semicolon because it is a widely recognised symbol of mental health and we want to show our solidarity to the community - for those who don’t know the semicolon in the English language means that this sentence could have ended here; but I chose to continue and add new information. A choice to keep going even with the pain of mental illness, trauma or suicidal thoughts, a choice that the first half of the sentence will not define the next. It represents a choice you have made not to end your story, but instead, to fight on. Your choice can be silent, but powerful.
You are the warrior on the wall, everyday, every hour, arrows will come across to knock you off that wall. We hone ourselves and make ourselves strong for those we protect behind the wall.
